Brief (around 300 words) personality outline of your character:
In Curse of the Black Pearl, James Norrington is a perfect gentleman. He is proper. Kind, but not overmuch. Serious, dull, and boring are his watchwords in polite company. He's never been a socialite, and prefers to muddle his way through on icy politeness. The popular rumor among the townsfolk of Port Royal is that there's an iron rod up his arse in place of a spine, and he's given them no cause to think otherwise. He smiles rarely and laughs even less, and, like a true seaman, feels unsteady on land and overcompensates for it.
At sea, James is another man. He is reckless in the pursuit of his duty, thinking nothing of himself but instead of the chase and the ocean. He's not nearly as sea nor ship-mad as Jack Sparrow, but his dedication to his crew and to the magnificent ships they sail on is near pathological. All the same, he's no stranger to taking chances and wild risks. It's arguable that this makes him a good officer: He tempers his recklessness with being steadfast, every wild risk is carefully considered, he cares intently for his men and his Lady, but cares most of all for the grand spectre that is his Duty.
James is, for the most part, all about the job. He is his job. It's his life; he sleeps aside his offices, takes all his meals at his desk, and never misses the chance to feel the creak and bend of a ship's deck under his own feet or to be the first to leap into the acrid clouds of smoke in every battle.
He does, contrary to popular belief, have friends; unfortunately, these friends are also colleagues and fellow officers, and his steward. He's not above a little boyish fun, but would never let it interfere with his work.
In Dead Man's chest, the game has changed. James went too wild, too reckless, against a man in the middle of a supernatural squabble. He lost everything, and gave up, and took to drinking. Every bit of James Norrington he had had, he lost.
When At World's End comes, James has restored his position, bettered himself in society, but has done it at the cost of the one thing he never hoped to sell. His honor. As much as James hates pirates, he hates wrongs against humanity worse. He expected from Beckett what he expected from himself- honor, duty, and a supreme sense of justice. But Beckett was nothing James hoped for, and was worse than he could have imagined. He hated himself, he hated the things he did, and he hated being out of control and kept in the dark. James died wholly disgusted with himself and with everyone around him for going so completely wrong.
Now, dead, James is bitter, angry, and remorseful. He wants nothing more than to return to being the man he was before he ever heard of undead pirates. He wants to be the strong, upstanding, charming (if cold) Commodore who, while not headed anywhere spectacular, was at least respectable. He can use that mask, or his mask of utter blankness, but he is still bitter and hurt by everything he cannot get back.
Brief (around 500 words) history and background of your character OR link to a really good wiki page with their history. In either case, explain where they cut off from the timeline:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Norrington James comes from the end of all of his cumulative canon. He's fairly sure this is supposed to be hell, or somesuch.
Sample post (just a general, everyday, puttering-around-the-ship post; please include a snippet of dialogue):
http://onebaddeed.livejournal.com/6166.html#comments http://community.livejournal.com/sixwordstories/25866539.html If the character has magic, mutant, or otherwise metahuman abilities, please explain what they are and outline EXACTLY how they function, as their powers may not work due to the nature of the ship or may need to be limited somehow:
None whatsoever, and he likes it that way.
Non-superhuman special abilities of note (Is your character a master ventriloquist? A naturally-occurring super-genius? The best martial artist in the world? Say so here):
James is a fairly able swordsman-- very good, in fact. He's also a fair shot, a good sailor, a terrific swimmer, and a good navigator. He's a passable wrestler, and keeps himself physically fit. He's got a sharp mind, which he likes to use for cutting remarks when he runs out of coping mechanisms, or whenever he feels like it. He's a Naval officer; he earned his commission, he didn't buy it. He has every skill that comes from a traditional Naval Military background. (His accent in Spanish is, however, terrible.)
