The basil was really easy, although I don't really know if I can over-winter it without grow lights, which looks really sketchy coming from an apartment! Mint is EASY to grow, and mine did fine inside all winter. Peppers are very easy to grow as long as you have enough light.
As for that tomato, I read stuff all over the internet. I think my project next summer will be to have a compost operation, and organically grow some cherry tomatoes, or something smaller than beefsteak.
As far as I can tell, it's all about watering correctly. Does it like to be watered just a little bit almost every day, or does it like to be half-drowned once a week? The internet is rife with this information. Oh, and plants can survive almost anything. If you catch the problem (overwatering and underfertilizing for me) before the plant is all the way dead, it should come back once the problem is resolved.
