A Not-So-Brief History of my Acquaintance with Slash

I think some of the first slash that I ever read was for Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell because, at the time, there was so very little of any fanfic for that book that I was willing to take whatever I could get. Or, at least, I was willing to try what was out there. Most of the slash fics which I have a vague recollection of reading back then were ( Read more... )

For me, the man reason I read/write fanfiction is if there was some aspect of the original canon that I liked, but wasn't explored enough for me - generally this is some kind of romantic/sexual aspect. More often than no that's slash, but it doesn't have to be. I think "quality time with old friends" sums it up just about perfectly. :)

And because I am now curious - where does Caesar come into all of this?

I nominally gave up trying to generalize what I write in fanfiction (or even conceive but never quite get around to writing), but I think it might still be true that much of it tends to be crossover in some sense . . . typically with some other fandom, but not always (A Bowl of Wine, for example, was a crossover of sorts with my thesis . . . or maybe a train wreck).

Excellent question! I am intending to write a Further History of my Acquaintance of Slash addressing particular fandoms . . . or possibly pairings (sort of like how I'm still intending to write a post on my thoughts of the three movies of Caesar.

And by the bye, sorry about disappearing off the face of the internet. I do intend (that word is starting to make me cringe :P ) to get back to you on a couple of other threads when I next get sick of finish my thesis.

I am actually not hesitant in saying that A Bowl of Wine is possibly one of the best Caesar fics I've ever read. :) I don't think I've ever asked you, and I'm nosy like that, so: what is your thesis?

Am I correct in assuming that a post on Caesar and a post on Brutus/Cassius would be one and the same? ;P

Haha, no hurries! <3

I'm quite honored and pleased that you think so :) Still, I dearly hope that Plato is spinning in his grave. My thesis is (still in the present tense, among other things, though only slightly so) the aesthetic appreciations of ancient Greek music (for which Plato has actually been very helpful; he and I just haven't been on good terms since my third semester Greek course last spring, in which we spent the entire semester reading his Apology of Socrates). Laws was one of my major sources . . . Republic was another, and that train wreck is just starting to get written. ;)

Yeah, that would pretty much sum it up. Narrow-minded and all, I daresay. ;P (Although, btw, I actually do almost write Cassius het.)
