Nice review and connection to Julius Caesar.

I think in the context of the time this film was released (only a few years after the end of WWII as you note), what's interesting is the sympathetic and heroic way a Nazi character is portrayed. Also that nobody sports a stereotypical German accent - other than Hitler!

In your foray into James Mason territory, I highly recommend you watch two of his films that are on TCM tonight - Odd Man Out (Mason always counted that film as his favorite) and The Man Between - marvelous performances from him in both and neither are available on Region 1 DVD - so highly unlikely you'll find them at your library. Be interested in reading your thoughts on them.
