i got a new bike this summer. my parents got me a tv for my birthday...i took it back and used that money to buy a bike. i lived at home, in natchitoches, this summer. it's a very small town. every business fits on about 4 streets. despite this, everyone there drives. i didn't really notice until i started to ride my bike everywhere i needed to go. i'd see my friends' parents and they'd say "hey mary beth, i saw you riding a bike down keyser yesterday. is your car broken?" they couldn't understand why i would want to ride. i hadn't done anything like that in years, and it got to the point this summer where i felt awful if i didn't do something to make me break a sweat that day. it was incredible the change that happened in me. i don't really know how to explain it, but when i read this post, i knew that i wouldn't have to explain it to you.

haha trading in a tv for a bike is the most diy thing i've ever heard. seriously though, i know just what you mean. riding bicycle is really the coolest. when i read your comment it made me think that if more people did ride bikes just around where they live, more towns would would probably be set up more like yours, with a centralized downtown area where things are easier to get to. sort of a more european take on urban planning i guess, rather than this modern american shift to towns that resemble vast strip malls along the highways which pretty much sucks.
