Haven't tried the crack, but I've noticed the same basic problem with the MMORPGs I have played. City of Heroes/Villains has a partial fix with its sidekick system that lets you partially equalize level disparities, but I still have trouble finding people I want to team with. Maybe someone who has successfully done the guild thing can give you some more useful advice.
