An Inconvienient Truth

So, I watched the former next President of the United State's movie tonight. My gosh, he is such a good speaker! Everyone should watch this, if not for the message then to just watch a master of his art go at it.

(btw - his message is fairly good to)

I've found that people who comment on this film fall into two catergories:

1) The people who nit pick the findings in the film, the detractors, the nay-sayers, people who say there is no scientific evidence and that the film ignores other research and shows it from a slanted angle.

And 2) Those who have actually watched the film.

There is always those who haven't seen the film but have read all the research, seen the change for themselves anyway, and know he's bloody right. Almost every person in agribusiness falls into this category.

I actually got very bored with this film. I know it's for Americans and 50 year old business men who have never been exposed to environmental education, but he just went on and on about things I learnt when I was ten. And I wanted detail. And source references. And he didn't cover the livestock industry at all.

After all the hype I want that hour or so of my life back. But if you have been living under a rock away from science and the environmental movement since the 1980s it's worth it.

I think I fall somewhere in the Jo-Vegetus spectrum. I'd have friends go see it and start gushing about how great it was. I'd then ask them if it told them anything they didn't already know. "Umm... No." So no, I haven't seen it. Haven't really seen the point.

On Gore's speaking skills, again, there seem to be two positions. People who think education is a good thing like him. People who don't... It reminds me of the message I got from Frank Luntz's book, Words That Work: "You should aim your message at stupid people, because that's what most people are." Sadly, this seems to be true.
