yes, my tune today is much different than my tune two entries ago. overall, you see, life is headed in a very good direction. i just spent copious amounts of time with ms. shay and had a lovely thanksgiving with my extended fam in maryland. it was so pleasant. we even went to see "RENT" (the movie), which was better than the musical, in my opinion ( Read more... )

I haven't done theory in like a year and a half, but as far as what "whiteness" entails in this context, I'd say it's relative to how it defines non-white. White assumes itself to be the dominant culture, and blackness would then assumed to be an "exotic" culture which can be mined for its trappings. As far as specifics go: nyeh. I'm too white. ;)

oh, ok. "darrin," not "darren." good to know.

i haven't tried his first DVD, but shay has it. i'm sure it's difficult. his stuff wasn't nearly as difficult, though, as the guy's stuff before him. his name's geo, i believe. so, so difficult.

i should try the britney dance. :)

Ohboy, this is was a long discussion into my Intro to Soc class... I think we must've touched on this while collating in the basement sometime. Anyway:

One interesting observation is how certain ethnic groups (Irish, Italian, Polish) were not at all considered part of the "White" catagory originally, but were somehow assimilated along the way. With this in mind, I remember my Soc teacher suggesting that as the number of prosperous hispanics in this country increases, the "White" term may likely expand to include the fairer skinned among them as well.

It's a weird idea, "whiteness".

In many situations it bears the simultaneous meaning of "stiff, boring, awkward" and "non-ethnic".
