I have welcomed a sailor home, and can honestly say nobody cares what anyone is wearing! But by the second or third day, they might actually pay attention.
Mine always smelled of motor oil, and had a large collection of dirty laundry. I am sure that Susan could relate to that, even if the details differed.
There is an old joke, (I cannot say how old,) that putting down the sea-bag is the second thing he does.
Poor Ned. By virtue of his rank he had to divest himself of baboons and tigers before he even got a hug.
