Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
“Sit up, baby girl, you’re making my arm go numb,” Adam groaned, as he gently pushed Allison back into a sitting position. She protested, and slumped against his shoulder. “Actually, you should be getting to bed.”
“I wanna see the end of the movie,” she yawned.
“You slept through most of it already, you don’t need to see the end,” he laughed, tiredly.
“Time to get you to bed, honey, before your mom comes down looking for you,” Lil said, as she rose from the other sofa and put her arm around Allison. “I’m gonna hit the hay myself.”
Scott and his brother had already gone to bed. Scott was tired from the extra piano rehearsals for the next day’s group number. Michael was off looking for cell phone reception to call his wife again, now that the kids were asleep. Megan and Alexis were already in bed, having called their babies earlier that evening. Anoop kicked Danny on the back to get him to stop snoring, before pulling him up off the floor and shoving him along to their room.
“I guess that’s it for movie night,” Matt laughed, clicking the stop button on the remote. “It’s only eleven o’clock and I’m dragging myself off to bed. What has this show done to me? Night guys,” he yawned, with a wave, on his way out.
“Are you going upstairs, too?” Kris asked, as Adam suddenly rose from the sofa.
“Me? Nah. I couldn’t sleep right now.”
Kris recognized the signs of the second wind beginning to sweep over Adam, as he paced along the carpet for a moment.
“But you can go, though. You don’t need to stay up for me.”
“Oh, I’m not tired,” Kris said, stifling a yawn while Adam was looking the other way.
“I’m gonna get some air. Come with me?” he asked.
“Sure.” Kris jumped up from the sofa and joined Adam at the doorway. He knew where they would be going. When Adam was jumpy, he went to the pool.
“What’s up?” Kris asked, stretching back in his usual lounge chair.
“Was it too gay?” Adam asked, earnestly, his brows furrowed. He was sitting on the edge of his chair, his hands running anxiously along his thighs.
“Was what too gay? ‘Cause that could be just about anything you do,” Kris replied, sarcastically.
“Fuck off! Ring of Fire, brat.”
“No. It was just gay enough,” Kris laughed. Adam scrunched his face at Kris, then sat back in his chair, crossing his legs. “Seriously, the way the girls were going crazy for you, it really doesn’t matter. It was hot, man, even Simon knows that, whether or not he would admit it. And you sang the crap out of it, too!”
Adam sighed, nodded, smiled charmingly at Kris, then rested his hands behind his head, closing his eyes. He was swinging his foot to a rhythm heard only inside his head, but Kris soon found himself humming along under his breath. Suddenly, Adam jumped up, startling Kris (who made a noise embarrassingly like a six year old girl), and jumped behind his chair.
“Come swimming with me!”
“Now?” Kris asked, craning his neck to look up at Adam.
“No, on Friday, I just thought I’d ask you now to make sure you were free.” Kris laughed at the way Adam was standing behind him, hands on his hips. “Of course now.”
“Adam, it’s late. We need to get up at dark-thirty tomorrow for rehearsals. We really should be getting to bed.”
“Spoil-sport,” he pouted. “But, I guess you’re right.” He leaned down, running his hands along the back of Kris’ chair. “Why are you always right?” he asked, his voice higher than he usually spoke around the others. With Kris, he felt more comfortable in being himself than with anyone else there. His voice would get a little higher, his gestures would be a little more overt. And he breathed a little easier. He allowed his arms to dangle down over Kris’ shoulders. “I guess I better get used to it,” he added, softly, as his fingers re-buttoned the pocket on Kris’ plaid shirt.
Kris wanted to take those hands in his, but he just sat there, unmoving for a moment, until Adam slid his hands back up Kris’ chest. He mussed Kris’ hair playfully, and said, “I guess I’m tired now, afterall.” Adam walked towards the patio doors, back into the mansion. At the doorway, he stopped to wait for Kris, and together they headed silently upstairs.
