On Saturday we saw Ben Folds at the Murat. I'd been excited to see Ben Folds in a venue with good acoustics since the only other time I saw him live, at Bonnaroo several years ago. This weekend's show turned out to be almost but not quite what I was hoping for -- a good show full of great performances of songs I love, but marred by a muddy mix ( Read more... )

Sounds like a lot of fun. I've heard a BFF song now and again, but, being musically uncultured, don't own any of their albums.

Ben Folds's first solo album, "Rockin' the Suburbs", is one of my favorite albums ever. I think it's a particularly nice album for folks with an RPG-oriented mindset because so many of the songs are really brilliant little character sketches. (So even if you don't consider yourself musically "cultured" enough for the arrangements to do much for you, you might find it lyrically interesting.)

The only time I got to hear Ben Folds he was the opening act for Tori Amos. That was a fine night of piano playing that was.

I shall have to check out Jukebox the Ghost. They sound fun.

That reminds me, I'd meant in my brief write-up above to rank Jukebox the Ghost as maybe the third-best opening act I'd seen. The first was Fiona Apple (who was the reason I bothered to go see Coldplay), and the second was Amiina, who opened for Sigur Ros and turned out to be a bunch of young women playing things like goblets of water and musical saw. Ben Folds as an opening act would be waaaaay up there, too.

Easily my top opening act though Lionel Richie as the opening act for Tina Turner is a very close second.
