A Different Kind of Viking Impression

Even today, I encounter people who still believe that the Vikings wore horns on their helmets. But even folk who know that the horns are mythical sometimes don't know that "Viking" was an occupation (I remember an SCA event when a Duchess insisted to everyone that she suspected that he Viking Race hadn't died out). Purple carrots sound like purple tomatoes. Weird and wonderful.

I always forget that orange carrots were relatively recent... and I never really realised that they were originally a different colour completely. Purple's just weird.

I never saw a purple cow... :)

The purole carrots available today--or at least available where I get them--are apparently were retrobred from the familiar orange carrots. They have a smoother taste than the woody flavor the original were supposed to have had, and the insides are pretty orange. But they arouse a bit of surprise on the line, and stews made with the purple carrots are very purple. Now *that's* weird!

Rake would be good. I remember seeing a wooden spade at an encmpment years ago, as well.

I've been wanting to do a spade for years and keep trying to find the proper piece of wood. I've already compromised on the plough because of unavailability of the proper size of wood (and the weight), so I might compromise on the shovel as well :\
