The Klutz Gene

Oct 11, 2006 19:06

I think every mother has at least one child born with an innate capacity to self-destruct.  In my family we call this the klutz gene.  Out of my four kids, three display an aptitude for self-inflicted abuse, yet with two of them the result is usually only minor cuts and bruises.  The other child is why I have a close personal friendship with Mrs. ( Read more... )

My family carries that gene... orejen October 11 2006, 19:31:05 UTC
I dislocated my own elbow once...by rolling over in my crib before I was even 2. :-/

I lost my two (loose) front teeth by falling out of a tree and swallowing them when I was 6.

I have a scar on the inside of my right arm from snagging on a bolt when I slipped while climbing around 7ish.

I've only broken one bone (I was 29), probably because my parents directed me away from trees and into books. I feel your pain (and my own!).

Ouch... I've had two sprained ankles both derived from dancing, and that's about it :/ Well there was the one time I tried to dive off of the edge of the baby pool when I was 2 and wound up with stitches under my chin.

Your flagpole incident reminds me of a time when I was about 12 and my family was playing softball. Our mulberry tree was second base and my mother ran into it head first at a full run. She bounced off the tree and landed on her back like Wile E. Coyote in a Saturday morning cartoon, sending the rest of the family into hysterical laughter and giving herself a concussion in the process.

I have a friend with this gene:
He's broken numerous ribs, fingers, both femurs and one of his elbows in motorcycle accidents.
He goes skydiving on a regular basis.
He's been shot AND stabbed.
He goes to the gym at least twice a day, but ended up blowing his knee on a 95 mile bike ride this weekend (same one I was in), a recurring injury since one of the broken femur incidents.
In his case it's a combination of clumsiness and stupidity risky behavior. I don't think he has an ounce of fear in his body ;)

That's my son...for the sake of length I left out a lot of injuries, or rather the specifics of them, but most all of his also came about due to a lack of self preservation instincts.
