So yet another chapter. I need some traditional Japanese drinks that a modern kid could have (ie, no sake). Additionally, it's set in the Pokémon world so there's all those Berries...but the issue is more the "traditional Japanese" part. Any styles I should know about? Anything to avoid (maybe a correlative import among the berries or something ( Read more... )

How about ramune? It's soda-pop in glass bottles that have a marble in the top to seal them. When you want to drink them you use this little piece of plastic that's packaged with it to pop the marble down. They come in various flavors and have finer bubbles then Coke or Pepsi. They get imported to the US, the local grocery store here carries them in their Asian foods isle.

Oh I know about Ramune. But I mean something traditional. I can find modern Japanese drinks no problem.

Hmm. I can't think of anything typically Japanese that's not alcoholic or modern.
But Japanese kids do drink tea... so maybe something like a berry tea/infusion?

Possibly. The setting is a formal party (editing post to reflect this) though, and people are milling around.

Be good for another chapter though!

I don't think that exactly hits the "traditional" part here.

There's amazake, a thick sweet beverage made from rice fermented with koji, most often seasoned with ginger and served hot during cold weather; the Japanese cookbooks I've read portray it as suitable for children (it often features in Girls' Day menus) and Buddhist nuns, implying that the alcohol content is minimal. Amazake is frequent temple and teahouse fare, which I'd say qualifies as traditional.

It appears in one of the later episodes of the anime Kimi Ni Todoke, where it is drunk by (among others) high-schoolers at a new Years's ceremony at a temple.
