[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Yako Katsuragi
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Fandom: Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
Timeline: Post-manga
History: Please supply a link to a credible source. If your canon is particularly obscure feel free to write your own history as much as you are able.
Character Personality: Yako's defining characteristic is her voracious appetite. Tales of her exploits involving eating surface everywhere. When Yako first becomes famous, these are the kind of stories that are reported to all the major tabloids, earning her the nickname “Piggish Detective.” This is increasingly exaggerated throughout the series, with her eating meals several times her mass and, at one point, recounting a story involving her trying to eat underwater.
The eating extended even to her school choice. She chose the one of the best schools in Tokyo, because it had the best cafeteria. As a result, she had to study extra hard to increase her average score by twenty points to get in. Her grades at the school are mediocre at best, as she says that it's beyond her level, even though she considers it well worth it.
Yako has more to her than meets the eye. However, the only people that seem to notice this are the people who themselves hide things from others - all the criminals that she helps to imprison. They are some of the people that she trusts most, because they know the real her just as she knows the real them. It is a former criminal who helps Yako get out of her slump after she leaves Neuro, and a letter from Yako to this same criminal is the framing device for the last chapter.
Yako is not one to turn away from a riddle or similar challenge. Even if her first instinct tells her to run away, she always stays to see the riddle get solved. Her goal is to understand why the criminal committed the crime, and it helps her to understand even a little, even if she doesn't forgive and accept what they did. She realizes that anyone can commit a crime and design a riddle so difficult it must have been someone supernatural who did it. She would not be surprised if even her mother or her best friend did something, as she has seen people fall into madness and do horrible things sometimes for a good reason, and others for no reason at all.
Character Abilities: Physical: In terms of physical traits, Yako is fairly ordinary in that, with one exception, she has nothing that stands out. She's your average Joe, except for her practically-iron stomach. This is a result of her not only being able to eat anything handy, but also to be able to eat anything safe - her mother's cooking has resulted in nitroglycerin and radioactivity, and it has also led to her being a fairly good cook of her own.
Mental: Yako's greatest strength is her ability to understand people's emotions and feelings, something that's developed as the series goes on. This proves invaluable more than once, as it is this ability that lets her figure out HAL's password, which Neuro had not been able to get around, and also which lets her help X figure out his true self. She also has high powers of observation, as when she determined what kind of life a former professor lived just by looking at his belongings.
Emotional: Yako is very resilient, being very good at keeping her cool in the face of adversity. Only two things really shake that, besides Neuro's torture, and those are when someone close to her dies, or when she is up against a supernatural foe, like X or Sicks.
Character Weaknesses: Physical: Normal weaknesses that come with being a normal person. She never suffers any aftereffects from overeating, but she can be very easily distracted by food. When she's hungry, even a little bit, she gets lazy and unable to move or think.
Mental: It was said above that Yako can handle herself well in the face of adversary. However, Yako is still an Ordinary High School Girl, and even she has her limits. When people close to her die, she wants out, and Neuro lets her leave. She lives her life in a daze, not even eating any food that her friends give her to try to cheer her up, and it's only through talking to her first customer that she decides to go back.
Emotional: Yako forms attachments to people very easily. She sees everyone she knows as innocent, and it can lead to her doubting her own conclusions and not wanting to believe someone is guilty until they confess.
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign? None of Yako's abilities are supernatural, and her ability to read people doesn't extend to her being psychic. She might be able to tell that a stoic character is upset, once she knows him well enough, but not that it's because his grandma just died or something.
What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign? Yako's real weaknesses are ones that a normal girl would have. There's nothing that entering Soul Campaign could help her lose, and nothing that she would gain from the result of a loss of a strength.
[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]
Why your character should be a Meister: Yako's greatest growth is in a role that would leave her as much more suited to be a weapon. However, as the series goes on, she gets her own quiet, more subtle strength, and she grows more confident in herself and her own abilites. If she were a Meister, it would be a much greater opportunity to exercise this than it would if she were a Weapon.
Meister Ability:
Soul Perception - Yako shows an ability to read people to the effect of sometimes being able to predict their actions, and she learns about people's mannerisms and personality very quickly. Soul Perception strikes me as a Meister Ability whose description almost mirrors this, changed to account for Soul Campaign not being in her universe.
Soul Glutton - Yako eats and eats and eats. An Ability that would let her take advantage of this would be almost perfect.
Calming Wavelength - Yako has emerged from countless brushes with other people's madness, some relatively harmless and some that are quite fearful. She's remained unscathed, and has only come out stronger from them.
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Soul Description: perceptive, clever, patient, hungry, insightful, average
Soul Appearance: Yako's soul is sugar pink. It has shapes that represent her barrettes on either side of her face, and shows the outline of her hair.
[ SAMPLES ]
First Person: I understand we're in the middle of a war. I don't know how much I'll be able to help, but I'm going to do my best. But, before I get started training, there's one very important thing that I need to know - what is the food here like?
Third Person:
Yako opened her eyes blearily, head swimming, back leaning against a column. She shook her head, stood up, leaning on the column for support, and looked around. She narrowed her eyes. This was unlike any place that she'd seen. It was dark and cold, that much she'd experienced, but there was a chill there that she couldn't quite explain. Really, she didn't want to know.
Could this be a new trick from Neuro, to figure out a way to get out of here? She sighed. He could have at least let her get back to Japan first, instead of taking her out of a plane midflight.
Was this a completely alternate dimension, then? Who had taken her here, and for what purpose? Her stomach grumbled, and she sank back down, closing her eyes. This wasn't good. She needed to think, needed to get to somewhere where she could eat, so she could think better. Her eyes narrowed. Surely the people native to this place had some kind of answers. The sooner she met them, the sooner she could start to figure things out.
Her stomach grumbled again, louder this time, and she forced herself to stand up and get going toward the other people here, that had appeared in the room with her. There had to be some food somewhere nearby, and there was only one way to find out.
