I do like the sound of the 'Lectronics II panel. If I were going to be along, I'd make a point of that. Indeed, I might even toddle along to the first, as SMD packaging does make for fiddliness in prototyping that we didn't experience in The Good Old Days - it's rather less straightforward now to simply begin with a chip and some support components, unless you're cool with QFP soldering, versus just being able to drop an IC holder onto a PCB, gloop the solder around each leg, and then smoosh the IC in place. (And desoldering QFPs, let alone BGAs.. =:P

SMD? Keep in mind, it's a panel for folks who've never even smelled burning flux. So basically showing just a little component-to-board and wire-to-wire. And strictly A/V, as the hotel with their precious carpet won't actually allow live soldering.
17" Powerbook: if it's a G4 model, e-waste it. Way too much effort and expense to run a decade-old OS and apps...at best, it's a DVD player anymore...and seriously, DVDs? If Intel: easiest is a mobo swap if you can find one (eBay, etc.) affordably. Otherwise, if a bare SMC chip can even be sourced, can make a metal foil shield with a cutout just around the SMC, remove w/heat gun. Long-term success rate is not high. Also, there's laptop places that specialize in this sort of repair (reballing GPUs and stuff), usu. best just to pay the fee than kludge it up at home...assuming the machine's even worth the salvage expense.
Ah, that's fair enough. Extreme soldering can be kept for Feral and the like. ^_^ (Which I might enjoy, but in the past, I've felt rather an anti-tech vibe. FSM knows, I'm not going to be voluntarily disconnected from the net)
Dandelion was (well, is) my previous MBP, a mid-2009 model, with a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo, 8GB, 1TB HD, 256GB SSD - quite a capable system, right up to the end, when its looming demise prompted Hazel's purchase, given it was my development system. Mm, if (*cough*) I can find a replacement SMC, I'd be inclined to let the pros take care of it. Ultimately, of course, whether it'd be worth the cost remains to be seen - at that age, I wouldn't be entirely surprised I could pick up its healthy equivalent and just swap the HD and SSD over for much the same cost.
It just feels rather frustrating, ne? A tiny, dirt cheap MCU curls up its toes, and everything else is completely stranded, for the sake of a 50¢ part. So it goes.. =:/
