The pitter patter of extra toed feet

This summer, when we moved in, we discovered the previous tenants left a cat behind. It had used the bedroom closet for a cat box and we had to replace the carpet. The cat, Smudge, (he has a small black patch on his otherwise white face) spent the warm days wandering around outside. Occasionally being fed by my landlady, who lives upstairs. Now

There are basically two schools of thought here.
Those who think the cats are plotting to rule the world,
and those who believe they already do.
Sometimes I'm in one camp, sometimes the other.
But then, I'm like that with a lot of things.
