I had practically memorized Are You There God?  It’s Me, Margaret.

I had no idea about periods when mine arrived. We were actually visiting some family friends and I spent most of the visit in the bathroom convinced that I was dying!

Oh you poor thing! I'm lucky that my parents were very up front about all of that....I've heard too many horror stories like yours.

I never read that particular Judy Blume, but I remember wishing fervently for my period by the time I was 13 and everyone else had gotten theirs. This is a great, straightforward accounting.

That is such a paternalistic reaction. "Don't worry, little girl, the biological clock will kick in." Stand up for yourself, girl! If you do decide to have children, there are more ways to get them than to bear them yourself.
