That was terribly sad, but sweet even so. My heart broke for Sam's loss--he never even got the littlest bit of normal. I think I felt sorrier for him then for Dean because in a way, Dean still had what he's always wanted. I also understood what John did, because what parent wouldn't, especially a parent who knew what was supposedly waiting down the line for Sam?
Thank you for sharing this--I love a story that unfolds in such a way that any ending would have been a good and perfect one.
Thank you so much! I'm just the worst at making everything sad. I wanted to make John's actions very much a sort of gray area, where you can understand where he's coming from or perhaps be upset at him for it, because I feel like he so often skates around that line in the fandom as it is! I'm not his biggest fan re: choices he makes, but I could at least understand why he would want to put Sam to rest. I'm glad that I portrayed it well enough that it's sympathetic even if it's horrible to imagine!
So sad and heartbreaking, but beautifully told. I loved how you at first we didn't know Sam was dead, and I loved that slow reveal you gave us, as well as the structure of the fic where we saw the past and what happened to Sam, as well hearing from him in first person.
The ending was bittersweet, but perfectly so. I loved how you dealt with John too, I could understand his point of view, of wanting to let Sam go and let him rest in peace, but at the same time I can understand why both Sam and Dean weren't ready to let each other go yet; the time just wasn't right.
Thank you for sharing this fic, it's beautiful and gripping. Take care, :)
Thank you so much for the comment! I'm so glad you enjoyed the overall set-up. I definitely wanted it to have a sort of slow reveal/mystery behind it. It was a pretty fun fanfic to format. ;)
