Alan Keyes vs. Barack Obama

Aug 05, 2004 08:46

So apparently my favorite Republican, Alan Keyes, might be challenging my favorite Democrat, Barack Obama, for the Illinois Senate seat.

If Keyes accepts the nomination on Sunday, this could easily be the most interesting election of my life so far.

Actually, it would probably be the only interesting election of my life so far.

So Keyes it is, huh...

I wanted to comment last time but got side tracked
when you were talking about being racist
even tho you're really classist and not racist..

Obama, from what I've read, is not black
at least no more black than he is white.

aside from that, i'm curious..
why is this election so interesting?

I imagine I am at least a little classist, but I'm not sure if my prejudice towards blacks can be written off as that. It's very easy for me to say that I'd feel the same way towards poor members of any other ethnicity or skin color, but when I think about it, I don't think that it's actually true.

For instance, Hispanics are often lumped in with blacks socio-economically, there are a number of them in my neighborhood, and I do not exactly feel comfortable around them, largely because they're usually speaking a language I don't understand. However, whereas I am merely uncomfortable around Hispanics, I dislike most blacks that I meet, mostly because I feel that members of the former usually respect me as a person, whereas members of the latter do not ( ... )
