I think I once heard Lucas say that "critics are destroyers" in response to a film student's question about the overwhelmingly negative critical response to Episode I.

Maybe this makes me an icky person, but it's much more logical and interesting storywise to me than what he actually scripted. =P

Well... I kind of like the "slow descent into evil" deal, although you know, the rape thing could totally still happen in the next movie. I imagine Portman's character does get utterly disgusted and/or terrified of him at some point, and what better impetus for that than getting raped, beaten, and killed. Well, the death should come after L&L are born, so it won't all happen at the same time--but it could still all happen in the next movie!
Hm. Now I'm actually looking forward to it. A maniacal conniving asshole Annakin is alot more fun than a pouty depressed one.
