  • The final word on Boston.

    foopy Jun 16, 2003 00:42

I got back from boston on Tuesday (almost a week ago) but I figured I'd mention a few randomly interesting things:

I pretty much agree entirely with Abelian75's thoughts on Boston. The Freedom Trail was an awesome way to take a walk, soak in a bunch of different parts of the city, and observe any tourist attractions that looked interesting on the ( Read more... )

  • Long-distance altruism, ambiguous ethics, and another goddamn manifesto.

    foopy Jun 12, 2003 02:24

Found an interesting Guardian article (courtesy Rebecca's Pocket) by a man named Leo Hickman who feels bad for not living an "ethical" life and wants to write a book about his attempts at doing so:

Not a day goes by, it seems, when we aren't told to change our lifestyles for the better. "Think about your impact on the planet," they say. "Think ( Read more... )

  • Technocrats suck, but so do Neo-Luddites.

    foopy Jun 11, 2003 10:10

Saturday: In the morning, went to a lecture by Raymond Kurzweil at my mom's conference (heh, it's called SCAR). The topic was "The impact of 21st Century Technology on Human Health and Society", which is just the kind of stuff that gets me high. The speaker is a disciple of Marvin Minsky, the guy from MIT who believes that humans are meat ( Read more... )

  • Review of Jewel's 0304.

    foopy Jun 09, 2003 21:57

I've never really gotten much out of music reviews, but I decided it could be fun to write one.

Efilmbuff told me that Jewel's latest album is popcandy. Being a fan of Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys (the music, not the personalities), I decided I had to pick this one up. Especially given the fact that, last time I heard anything about Jewel, she ( Read more... )

  • Busted the Animatrix.

    foopy Jun 04, 2003 11:39

I saw the Animatrix last night. All around, very cool stuff. I was particularly impressed with the variety of the stories; all kinds of different animation styles, each somehow appropriate for the particular mood of its short film, which ranged from emotional to contemplative to philosophical, unsettling, somber, or crazy cool martial arts festy ( Read more... )

Too tired to write anything interesting, so:

I got an email today from the director at the masters program at the University of Chicago and I got accepted ( Read more... )

  • So apparently Gollum won the Best Virtual Performance prize at this year's MTV movie awards. According to the IMDB, Andy Serkis, who played Gollum, taped an acceptance speech via video but was interrupted by Gollum, who took over the screen, snatched the award from Serkis' hands and snarled, "You're a liar and a thief. It's mine!"

    Awesome.
