You should email your complaint, with special emphasis on the money you wasted on this whole thing (after you've completed the returns and calculated everything). Sometimes the people in charge of responding to emails react differently than the people at the call centers. Maybe they'll send you another gift card or something.

I suppose I could rewrite it so that it sounds less angst-ridden. Since a co-worker's name is attached to the order, I don't want to sound too dickish, even if I'd feel somewhat justified at this point.

When I last bought a refrigerator, Target.com had the best price, but there were a lot of reports of them not being handled correctly during shipping - i.e. being tilted, or in one case it arrived on its side. I decided not to order from them.

I once had a problem with a Target.com order and...yeah. I also just ended up returning it to the store.
