ONE.

Adrian smiled sadly at the Christmas tree, with its sparkling lights and colourful decorations: crystal balls, angels with paper wings, and silver stars. The presents at its feet, all wrapped up in glossy red paper, were untouched. Only the year before, he’d been dragged out of bed by his children at dawn and, still half asleep, he’d watched them open their presents from “Santa Claus”. This year, they were spending the holidays with his wife (ex-wife, he reminded himself) and her family and he was left there in LA, staring at the Christmas tree and painfully lingering in memories. He sighed. He shouldn’t have turned down his family’s invitation for lunch. Even if he really wasn’t in the mood, it still would have been better than… this. But then again, he didn’t want to ruin Christmas for them too.

He heard the bell ringing. Great, it must be his annoying neighbours with fake smiles, pie and holiday wishes. He didn’t move, waiting for them to go away. But they didn’t: the bell rang again. And again. Resigned, he went to the door and opened it.

“Surprise,” said a smiling Milo. He pulled Adrian closer and kissed him on the lips.

TWO.

“Mistletoe,” explained Milo. Right, the mistletoe. Of course. And yet Adrian’s heart wouldn’t stop racing and he didn’t seem to be able to stop staring at his friend. Gathering what was left of his sanity, he stepped back from the door to let Milo in.

“Are you gonna say something or do you plan to keep on staring at me for much longer?” asked the younger man, visibly amused.

Adrian blinked a couple of times before being able to answer, “I just didn’t expect you showing up. Weren’t you supposed to be at your parent’s?”
Milo shrugged as he took off his jacket. “I would’ve missed you,” he said, and Adrian didn’t know if he was serious or not. Sometimes it was really hard to tell with Milo.

“Yeah, me too,” replied Adrian, a bit more comfortable now that the warmth of Milo’s body against his was fading. He gestured for the couch, inviting him to make himself comfortable. Milo didn’t move.

“I lied,” he said, and now it looked like he was the one feeling uneasy, “about the mistletoe, I mean.” Just a few seconds, and he was already back into Adrian’s arms, his lips touching the other man’s.
