Background: (at least 150 words, please)
In 1920,
Damien is in his mid-twenties, and is the younger of two brothers from
West Cork, Ireland. While very close to his brother Teddy as a child, he
was an only child from the time his brother was sent to seminary at age
12. When he was old enough, Damien went to university and became a
doctor. When we first meet him, he's planning to move to London to work
at a prestigious teaching hospital. The war that grips Ireland in 1920,
however, does not let Damien escape. After seeing a friend of his
murdered for no reason by British soldiers, Damien joins the IRA, under
the leadership of his brother Teddy. With their 'flying column', the
O'Donovans do their part in forcing the British Empire into the treaty
that will eventually partion Ireland. When the terms of the 1921 treaty
become clear, and with Ireland on the verge of Civil War, Teddy and
Damien are ripped apart, finding themselves on different sides of the
political fence - Teddy donning the uniform of a Free Stater, while
Damien continues to struggle for the true socialist Irish Republic that
he believes his friends fought and died for. After a raid in which
several people are killed, Damien is taken prisoner by the Free State
Army - and Teddy. Teddy begs that he divulge the whereabouts of their
arms, and turn in their leaders, which Damien refuses to do. Because of
Damien's refusal to take the amnesty given, he is finally killed by a
firing squad - the orders to which are given by his brother.
Personality: (at least 100 words, please)
Damien is
the smarter of the two brothers. He's well learned and well educated,
holding a medical degree. Gentle, and not wanting to become involved in
the war that convulses Ireland, he struggles a great deal with some of
the things he must do (such as killing a very young man he's known since
he was a boy after he turned them in). Nonetheless, he's also a bit of
an idealist (although he denies it), and holds his beliefs very close
to his heart. When Damien decides he's going to do something, he throws
his whole heart and soul into it. He holds very tight to those things he
believes in, and believes in them enough that he's willing to (and
does) die for them. He is a very caring person, easy to love - and this
is part of the problem. His love for the people of Ireland, his love for
his family and friends - these things are both his strength and his
eventual undoing.
Physical Description: Damien is very slight, with dark brown
hair and blue eyes. He's about five eight, very skinny, but with a
personality and charisma that greatly transcend his size.
Does your pup have any special powers/abilities/gifts that we should be aware of? (i.e. super healing, telepathic etc) He's a doctor, but nothing supernatural.
What brings your character to the village? What does he need to learn/achieve, etc?
Damien is arriving in the moment after his death at the hands of his
brother. He has just gone through several years that have ripped him
apart emotionally (and physically) and torn and reshaped some of his
core beliefs. While in his life he had little time to sort out these
changes, to make sense of what had happened to him because of the things
he had to do (like killing in cold blood), being in the village will
give him a chance to come to terms with his past and again come to
understand what is most important in his life. I'm hoping that being in
the village will also give Damien the chance to finally realize some of
the dreams he had before history intervened, and to find the peaceful
and rewarding life that he had always very much desired.
Why do you want to play this character? Oh, so many reasons! I
first saw this movie in the summer of 2006 while on a study abroad
program in Irish Studies in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It affected me
emotionally more than just about any movie I have ever seen, and
literally made my heart ache with the tragedy of it. I would love to
have the chance to explore Damien more than we see him in the movie, and
to explore those aspects of him that two hours, by necessity, leave
underdeveloped. Also, my academic studies are in Irish History and
politics (one thesis short of a masters XD), and I've been searching for
some time for a fictionalized character I could play that was accurate
to Irish history. Damien fits this bill 100% - a completely fictional
character, but also historically accurate in every way.

write this (well, the beginning of his last thread is, most of the
actual tags are within the eight weeks, but I don't know how that's
counted?), but I've tagged him into a new thread tonight, actually, so
by the time you read this, he should be set. :)
