Tidings of Comfort and Joy
The Mentalist | Jane/Lisbon | 2,614 words
Happy Holidays, watchyouwalk!

Notes:
(i) watchyouwalk's original prompt was for Anne/Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables, but I didn't quite have that in me this month (although I'll try writing them in the future) so when she gave me a second prompt that was a Lisbon prompt, I kind of combined them in my ( Read more... )

This was cute! I loved her gift. And I loved the paragraph that funbol mentioned. Quirky gifts are always funny, but I loved how this one was heartfelt and meaningful. This will probably go on her list of "Best Christmas Presents Ever." Liked Lisbon's gift to Jane, as well. Yay for fluffy goodness :)

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Once I had the idea in my head, it just wouldn't go away. Perfect gift for Lisbon!

Squee! Grace!! This is so perfect and I LOVE IT. Best way ever of tying AOGG into TM. Wonderful surprise. :D

Also:
Fortunately with Jane, she finds she doesn’t have to say anything because he already knows.
"Then you wouldn't have to saaaay... Cause Iiiii'd aaal-reeeeady knooooow" INTENTIONAL OR INTENTIONAL?
If not, then your subconscious is fantastic. More Than Words reference ftw!

I didn't have to squint to see the J/L, but then, I never really do. Heh. AND HER TREE. As Andrée said, she would so have a Charlie Brown tree! That was exactly my thought when I read "the only one left at the lot", cause you know that's just what Lisbon would do. JUST.

Okay, okay. Rambling, sorry. But I really do love this and you are the BEST for writing it. Happy holidays to me ♥

SO GLAD YOU LIKED IT! I took some liberties with your prompts, but OH WELLLLL. It happens :D

That was actually an unintentional reference, but if you want to pretend it was intentional then GO FOR IT ;) My subconscious is clearly fantastic. Yes. *nods*

Yes, well Lisbon was late to the getting-her-tree party, but she would absolutely do that. It's so very like her.

Again, I'm really glad you liked it! Happy holidays to you indeed, I hope they were wonderful ♥

I have to ask. Why temporary? Grand and over-the-top, yes. But I don't think they were designed to be fleeting. Jane hides in plain sight. He does things in so extravagant a fashion that people don't look past the superficial. It is only though these lavish gifts that he can safely express his feelings without fear of them being discovered. And the gifts are personal. The pony because he knows her childhood was stolen from her. The emeralds because she could use "a bit of empty glamor". And the dinner was less a gift than an indulgence on his side, getting a slice of fantasy.

That's not to say that the books aren't special, but they're special because they're intimate, quiet and unassuming. They're the sort of thing people automatically look into, explore the motivations. They're special because he's not hiding.

I mean temporary in the fact that they were never things that she was going to keep, aside from obviously the memories and possibly a picture of the pony in her office. Jane does things in big, extravagant gestures because that's how he works, but he also knows Lisbon and knows that she's never going to keep the emeralds, the same with the pony, and the car/dinner is only a one night thing. Things like that are not really Lisbon's style, in general, and Jane knows that (which I think is one of the reasons he enjoys doing them for her ( ... )
