She is eighteen when she leaves North Carolina for Smith College.

Her father isn’t pleased, and her mother wants her to reconsider Chapel Hill, but she is determined. She has never once shied away from a challenge, so with fierce determination, she packs her bags and leaves home.

In Massachusetts, she sticks out like a sore thumb. Not that she’s ever liked that cliché, mind you, but it’s the only expression that stays with her. She studies history and government and French, and the other students study her, as though she is something entirely foreign.

Sometimes, she feels like she is.

---

The whispers follow her to Harvard Law School. All the people who think they know her, but really don’t. As though the fact that she voted for Owen Lassiter has anything to do with her ability to pass Contracts.

Not only does she pass, but she does so at the top of her class.

“You are a very unique woman, Ms. Hayes,” the dean tells her on graduation day. “I expect great things from you.”

She beams at the compliment. She wants very badly to deliver.

---

She moves to Washington and creates a niche for herself as a political analyst. She’s just beginning to feel comfortable when her entire life changes in just a few short days.

The truth is very simple; she never wanted to do Capital Beat.

But when Wengland gets stuck in Denver, she’s the only option. She gets the phone call, and they ask her to fill in. To serve.

Reluctantly, she accepts.

Mark Gottfried advises her not to overreach.

She doesn’t.
