Kate never believed in looking back before this.
That’s the thing about always being on the run; she simply never had time to look behind her.
Now she sits on the plane as it flies away from the island, and she knows that this time, it really is the last time. Tears sting at the corner of her eyes, and she blinks them back before finally wiping them away.
This new feeling, she bottles it up and locks it away. She still has a long road ahead of her.
It’s different this time, away from the island. She moves Claire and Aaron into her old place because continuity is the best thing for Aaron, but she sees Jack around every corner.
“I remember,” she says softly, some nights, when she wakes up alone in bed. “I miss you. I remember.”
---
She stays in the house until Aaron goes off to college. Always just the three of them, but in her mind, sometimes, the wrong three.
Without Aaron, the house feels empty, and she finds herself wondering what if too often. Although she considers selling the house on many occasions, she can never quite bring herself to do it.
This is the first place she’s ever allowed herself to settle, and she reflects sadly on all of the other ways this was supposed to go.
That first year that Aaron is gone is the hardest. After that, she allows herself to take long weekends to escape. She heads to the airport and tries not to think too hard if the plane hits any turbulence.
She’s spent the last eighteen years being one of Aaron’s mothers. It’s the best title she’s ever held, but she was so busy being Aaron’s mother that she never fully allowed herself to miss Jack.
Kate never let the men in her life define her, but she always liked the woman she was when she was with him.
She takes him with her everywhere she goes.
