When MLK was leading demonstrations, there was a clear mandate, and a cause with justice. People of disparate races were afforded unequal treatment under the law

On the historical evidence, going back to 1993 at least, the answer would have to be, “To loot.” There isn't a black riot (is there any other kind?) that doesn't feature this as its primary activity. Hurricane Katrina was an attack by mercenaries out of the Thirty Years' War, to judge by the looting, raping, pillaging and despoiling that followed in its aftermath; when New Orleans fell to Union troops it did not suffer as it did at the hands of its own “citizens,” who considered Federal aid merely more plunder, to which they were of course “entitled” by accident of birth. [They're so oppressed, you see. Just ask them, they'll tell you. Hey, what works is good, and shaking the White Liberal Guilt Tree has showered unearned largesse upon them for fifty years now!.]
They want payback for slavery. It really is that simple.
We as a society have spent so many years apologizing and bending over backwards for them, because of slavery - something no one today was alive to either suffer or perpetrate. It's the most insane thing I have ever witnessed in my lifetime.
Because there was slavery 100+ years ago and segregation a generation ago, they have convinced themselves that they are perpetual victims and therefore DESERVE to do whatever the blazes they please.
They feel they're entitled to it. And since everyone tells them they are victims and victimized, then they feel they deserve it even more.
It enrages me to the point where I feel physically ill. This disgusting habit of excusing these violent criminals has seeped into even churches - even my own, to some extent!
Based on what I've seen on TV, to caper and burn. IMO anyone participating in these riots is self-identifying as a creature of negative social worth -- every one killed would be a net gain to our species and society.
Protesting against poverty. Behaving in the way they're presumed guilty of already being. Letting off teenage steam.
In a FB discussion yesterday, someone else mentioned the killings of white people by police and that these never get media attention. So it's partly a case of biased reporting perpetuating the perception of racist police.
"protesting against poverty" in the US seems a lot like "protesting gravity" by the obese. Sure, it sucks that the obese are disproportionately affected by gravity, but there really isn't anything anyone externally can do about it, is there

Also, white people who flee and resist arrest also get worked over. My crazy uncle got his ass kicked in his own driveway once because he ran from the cops all the way home. It's like Chris Rock said, "If the police have to go get you, they're bringing an ass-whooping with them."
I have to agree with baron_waste on this one. Most of these loads aren't really after a cause. They're just into finding any excuse to destroy property and get something for free, as if it were a big fun party.
I really hate the "If you don't want to get shot by police, don't break the law" phrasing. There are plenty of cases where the law is unjust. The holocaust was lawful, and everyone killed in it was killed for crimes that they actually had committed. Just because it's law doesn't make it right

Not in these cases.

I know that. I was speaking directly about these recent cases, and all the others like them. We are not yet to the point where the entire legal system is gone and all the laws are now unjust.
However, Eric garner wasn't killed for selling untaxed cigarettes, he was killed accidentally as a result of resisting arrest.
Don't resist arrest, especially for doing something you know is wrong.
Michael brown wasn't killed for robbing a cigar store, he was killed for physically assaulting a police officer.
Don't assault a police officer.
Trayvon Martin wasn't killed for walking in a hoodie, he was killed for smashing a man's head against concrete.
