Brave New World

Today I found myself mulling over the marvels of modern dieting and my conspicuous lack of effort in that department. It seems fashionable these days to consign oneself to the so-called Atkins' Oblivion Diet (heretofore dubbed "Alpha Omega"), which purports to eliminate all complex carbohydrates from one's diet by supplanting them with gratuitous ( Read more... )

However, the oversight you have made is that low fat/high carb diets really DON'T work for everyone. If they did, then everyone would merrily be svelte and happy after going on weight watchers. But obviously, that is not reality. Individuals become obese due to different things and therefore need different methods by which to become lean again.

I hate to upset all the ignorant and/or skinny people commenting, but not all people who are overweight got that way by being sednetary and gluttonous. That's right, being overweight is not always because a person sat the couch for eight hours a day gorging themselves on Haagen Daas and HoHos. Sometimes heavy people are rather athletic -participating in league sports and/or gym classes, sometimes they eat like a bird, and sometimes they do both. But in relation to food, it is not always the portion size that is important. An individual's metabolism and biochemistry (often altered in obesity) must also be taken into consideration.

Perhaps Atkins is an extreme diet, but so are slim fast, ( ... )

First of all, I never advocated low fat/high carb diets. I am completely aware of the fact that both carbohydrates and fats are necessary to maintain proper health. My issue was with people (and corporations who manipulate the masses for their own gain) that subscribe to the new-fad ideology that eliminating all or nearly all carbohydrates from their diet will prevent them from getting fat, while consuming enormous amounts of fat and even increasing their fat intake. I have nothing against well-educated, intelligent Adkins' supporters (such as yourself) who merely wish to reduce their intake of simple carbohydrates and increase the amount of protein in their diet. Again, this was not an attack on people who use the Adkins regimen wisely or even obese people in general. I myself have been overweight before, and I realize that diet and regular exercise are sometimes not enough ( ... )

I've been on somewhat of a crusade against Atkins ignorance myself...

"State of ke-what-sis? I'm just cutting back on my carb intake. I heard those are fattening."

I'm not so much against the ignorance...let 'em be ignorant, I don't care that much. What I am concerned about is that the many flavors of Haagen-Dazs in the freezer section of the grocery store are being culled...to make room for Keto®.

Yes, not to mention all the low-carb varieties of chocolate bars that are making their debut in coffee shops. Not that I mind them of course, its just that they've managed to supplant the REAL chocolate bars.

Down with Fatkins!
