Peons who Epitomize Tasteless Advertising (PETA)

Jul 23, 2004 00:31

These days, it seems almost futile to protest the rampant exploitation and objectification of women in the media. Given its mainstream prevalance coupled with the rather disturbing aura of complacency and acceptance among women, I decided to abandon hope of trying to incite a feminist backlash against these outrageous beauty standards. In fact, ( Read more... )

Now who wouldn't take a minor ailment such as liver sclerosis over a monumental acne breakout any day?

*raises hand*

I've got a liver only Keith Richards would love.

Seriously, I used to work for an unnamed animal rights organization and know all too well about PETA, its supporters and tactics. The shit-hole organization I worked for "emulated" (my tyrant ex-boss' favorite word; we weren't stealing, we were "emulating") many of those same tactics, though our budget was about 1/10th that of PETA's. In fact, toward the end, I took to calling it "Little PETA" or "PETA Lite" simply because everything we attempted was weighed against whether PETA would do it. I agree that PETA can be a bit too fanatical in its approach to ending animal cruelty. BUT ( ... )

Compulsive grooming and such may have a biological basis, but exploiting these insecurities really does nothing to help further PETA's agenda What do female insecurities regarding appearance have to do with animal rights? Nothing, which is precisely why these ads are superfluous. Furthermore, an organization such as PETA should seek to break the mold, not cater to conventional beauty standards. Otherwise, how can they convince us to break the age-old tradition of raising animals for human consumption? It is a bit hypocritical to defiantly tear down one myth and then perpetuate another.

Also, I omitted this ad which shows just how far PETA is willing to degrade women just to get its point across. Again, why is it acceptable to portray women as "meat" but then we're not supposed to eat animals? Don't get me wrong, I'm vegetarian, but PETA certainly wouldn't convince me if I weren't already.

People like that give the "ditto-heads" ammo, and there's nothing that pisses me off than having morons on my side who do nothing but make the other side seem justified in their arguments.

Perhaps freedom of speech should come with an I.Q. test.

PS I had to wait until I was at a computer facing a back wall to read that... it was a little "iffy" for the lab, lol!
