Let's see...are you familiar with the Flaming Lips?

familiar, but I don't actually own a single album of theirs.

They have an anime-themed album called Yojimbo and the pink-haired robots or something. =P

Well, you probably heard "She Don't Use Jelly", "Turn it On" and maybe "Bad Days" back in the mid 90's. They've altered their sound a lot since then.

The album you're thinking of is Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, which isn't really a concept album...it's just that four songs kinda link together to tell a story (mind you, two are instrumental) and there are a couple of other songs that aren't part of the story but deal with the same themes. Despite the title (and let's be honest, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots makes too much sense to be the title of a real anime or manga), I'm not even remotely sure to what extent anime or manga might even have influenced it.

Oh yeah, I just remembered...a recent Lips song called "The W.A.N.D." is used in one of the new Dell ads (it's the one where a cardboard-box mecha walks down a suburban street).

For that matter, what about My Bloody Valentine?

Also familiar, but I don't even know if I have heard anything by them...

If you've seen Lost in Translation, and I'd probably be shocked if you haven't, you've heard My Bloody Valentine. Sofia Coppolla is a big MBV fan and got their guitarist to do the score, and there's at least one MBV song on the soundtrack itself (the name of the song is "Sometimes", I don't remember the details of the scene itself but I seem to associate it with driving at night).

I should put in the caveat that I can't give you one song from every MBV or Flaming Lips album as I don't own every album (in the case of the Lips, I haven't gotten around to picking up their early stuff; in the case of MBV, it's just that the really old stuff has never been available on CD at all).

Ironically, I am JUST NOW finishing a mix tape of my favorite songs on a single disk. I don't think it's quite done. However, it has mostly commercial acts you'd recognize and know already. But there are possibly a few on there you hadn't heard before. It's not quite what you want, as it doesn't focus just one band, but hits a broad spectrum.

I have my previous online still if you want it. I can send you a link to it, I made it 2 years ago. Email is username at gmail.

I'm a big fan of Billy Joel and Jimmy Buffet. Also Leonard Cohen, although my knowledge of _all_ his material is non-existent. Would any of these three interest you?
