I've got a Canon Pixma combination printer/scanner/copier. It has separate cartridges. I like it quite a bit...it even has a tray for 4x6 photo paper. I have the 600...Sam has the 500.
It's affordable. Replacing a FULL set of print cartridges costs upwards of $40 - $60...but it's a dye based color...which resists streaking. But so far...I replace the black for about $20...every six months...and the color cartridges every year. (I'm a light user of color.)
Watch out for printers that have the print head IN the ink cartridge. The cartridges will be ungodly expensive...and sometimes the HEAD will go bad on the cartridge before the ink is out.
