Just a bit of shaking last night.

I was sitting on my bed when it hit. Now, I'm no longer afraid of earthquakes, not after the Northridge quake. So, when it started I just yelled out something to MG like "it's a quake". You know, one of those duh things. But I kept on doing what I was doing . . .then it got stronger. I jumped out of bed and into the hall, since the bedroom has ( Read more... )

I much prefer getting these 5.0 or less quakes every once in a while to relieve the pressure. It gives me a (probably false) sense of security that this is helping hold off a large damaging quake.

Yes, I always felt the same way when I lived in the Bay Area - after surviving the Loma Prieta quake of 1989 (at 7.2, "The Big Enough One" we called it), I constantly felt that smaller quakes that might be damaging to other areas were great for the Bay Area. I suppose it's the same in your part of CA, that the building codes take into account earthquake country, and so the buildings are much more able to sustain a largish quake than other areas of the world where building codes aren't up to snuff...Anyway, glad you and MG are okay and the quake was a "small enough one" for you!

The experts say that less severe quakes don't necessarily relieve the pressure. I always like to believe it does, though. : )

This was on the Newport Beach/Inglewood fault line, so I would guess you would feel it. I noticed a shop in LB lost a window due to damage. My house lies on this fault, I know.

The Newport/Inglewood fault caused a huge and very damaging quake in Long Beach way back in the 1930's.

Thanks for that link. I never knew about that earthquake until last night when my Mom mentioned that LB had had a bad earthquake in the 30's. Now how she knew, I have no idea. She was born and raised in Pennsylvania.
