I haven't been keeping my livejournal up to date with my life plans, so here's some big news:

Andy and I are going on a bicycle trip beginning from April to ??? (probably September, maybe forever), from North Carolina to Maine: rough outline of our route. We are planning to stop at lots of small, sustainable farms; parks, wildlands, and forests; and ( Read more... )

Here is the poem I wrote for you. I've been meaning to give it to you for a couple weeks now... The imagery is of you at the Orchard, though mornings on a bike tour are equally fitting ( ... )

Now I'll have to live up to such a generous portrait!

I like the idea of rhythms of water washing through chambers of my mind!

You are such an amazing, endearing creatrix! Did you get my letter yet?

I want to know about that NC road that appears to be in the ocean. I'm guessing the ridge it sits on is manmade - but why? And if not, what created that ridge in the middle of a tectonic plate? And why does there need to be a road there?

The road is along the Outer Banks: "barrier islands" of sand that are washed into that shape by waves. They are a sort of buffer between the ocean and the coast, but they are natural. They are constantly changing--a significant hurricane might wipe out a few islands.

I couldn't answer why a road "needs" to be anywhere, but there are towns on some of the islands, and lots of tourists come to see this area. There are some parks and preserves (e.g. http://www.nps.gov/caha/), and some islands have no roads, but can be visited by ferry. It certainly is a delicate ecosystem that would probably be better off without roads. Andy's mom lives on one of the islands in a town called Kill Devil Hills, so we're starting out our trip by visiting her.
