Megacon '06 Report

Mar 02, 2006 08:37

Okay, so I've finally quit procrastinating and am going to write my con report. Here goes :

Friday -
Met up with janxangel at my place around noon, and we drove up to Orlando. Helped her finish a little bit of cosplay stuff on the ride up by stuffing some foam into Hylian's gloves. Anyhow, once we got to Orlando, we met up with Phoenix and got everything put in the room. Janx still had some commissions to finish up, so Phoenix and I headed out for the con. Luckily, we'd gotten there at about 5, so the ticket lines were non-existent.

I made my rounds in the dealers' room, and played a little Panel De Pon afterwards. Once there wasn't much left to do, ran into Phoenix again and a group of us headed out to Perkins for dinner. Afterwards, brought some food back for Janx since it was like 9 and she was getting pretty hungry by then. Everyone went to bed pretty early on Friday; I fell asleep at about 11 and the others weren't too far behind. I hadn't gotten good sleep in about a week though, so it was nice to get my 8 hours in.

Saturday -
We woke up and the three of us headed out to Friendly's for breakfast. It was really good; I dig Friendly's food, so it was good to be able to have some again. The closest one locally is in like Royal Palm, so I rarely have the time to head out there. Anyhow, we finished up and Phoenix and I headed out to the con, since Janx still had a bit of the cosplay stuff to finish. Wandered around the con for a bit, and then found out they were having a Super Puzzle Fighter II tourney. So I signed up, since that's one of my favorites. There was some pretty stiff competition, but I was able to win, and got some sort of DVD as a prize. Good times.

Then we went and caught an episode of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, which really left me wondering what the heck happened between the first series and A's. Because the original series was a pretty cutesy, light-hearted show (at least, the first six episodes I'd seen). In A's, it's pretty dark and there's mecha elements. I kinda preferred the original.

Afterwards, I went and found some OA folks, and hung out for a while. Then, once people kinda scattered, called up Janx and found she was on her way to the con with Will. Met up with her and we did the dealers' room again. Ran into Nall there (and his friend, who had an awesome Renji cosplay going on) too. About halfway through, I went to grab some soda and wasn't able to find Janx again. So I putzed around for a while until we met up. We chilled with OA for a while, and then proceeded to round up a group for dinner at Don Pablo's. We went over there with BigOtaku, Hujak, Yeerkiller, and Slade Gar. The food was pretty good (especially the queso dip).

So, once we got back to the hotel, we tried to find the party. We saw some people out by the pool, but not many of them were OA. So Janx called up Chade and we found out they'd broken up the party. So we played a few rounds of Apples to Apples with Biggie and the rest, which was pretty fun, and then a few of us went in search of Chade's room. Naturally, there was a party, which was broken up twice and then re-formed.

The party was awesome, got to see some friends that live on the other end of the state (like Lt. Dan) and got to chat with some that we don't run into very often (like green-otaku, Lutter, Raeburn, and Minx). And of course, chilled with chadect and the_finality. Hung out until about 4AM, when people started heading out. I'd woken up at 6 that morning, so I was needing some sleep by then. So I went back to the room and crashed for a few hours.

Sunday -
Woke up at about 7, since everyone needed to pack and grab showers before 11. Oh, I think that was the first time Anji (our fourth roommate) was in the room for any amount of time. Anyway, we got all our stuff together, checked out, and had breakfast at Friendly's again (since it was right next to the hotel). Another good breakfast.

I had to rush back to the con, because the AMV contest started at noon and we left Friendly's at about 11:30. Made it there at about 11:50, so the line was already out the door and down the hallway, but I was still able to grab a decent seat. There weren't a whole lot of entries shown this year (I'd guess about 20 or so), but about 3 of them were Advent Children vids (and I'm not a big AC fan -_-). When mine came up to play, it was kinda stuttering and skipping all over the place. I'm not entirely sure why, but I think it may have something to do with it being an MPEG-2 and them playing the entries in Windows Media Player (WMP doesn't handle MPEG-2 right sometimes). Fortunately, during the winner showings, they fixed it so it played smoothly. I picked up Best Comedy, which I was pretty happy about.

After the contest, we made another trip to the dealer's room, hung out at the OA table for a bit, and then headed back home. By then, most of the people were at the concert, so not many people were around to chat with. So we headed back home.

All in all, it was a fun convention, and it was awesome to see some of my Orlando and Tampa friends again. It was one of those cons that isn't great by itself, but the people you spend time with really make it fun. Look forward to seeing you all at JACON (or Anime Express, for those who are going).

Oh, and I just finished this new icon of Angela from Silent Hill 2, so I wanted to use it even if it kinda doesn't fit the mood of the entry. ;)
