Just a drive by post to say ITA! with everything that's written above, and that I'm going to read the other posts soon when I have time to sit and digest everything that you've written and when I can write more than 'great post' in reply. :)
The mythology was the backdrop and the trappings for the character stories. It sometimes provided challenges and tests for them, but it was all about them, their connections with one another, the way they took care of each other on their journeys, and how they sometimes were lost and found on the way. The story of Lost was, of course, primarily, the story of Jack's journey. There was never any doubt of that, or of the inevitability that they would take the most time resolving his story and his arc. Some people have a hard time understanding this, and my question to them is, "WTF is your problem? Is watching TV really that hard for you?"
LOST = The Jack Show. I am so in agreement with that statement.
People who didn't catch the drift when the entire show opened up with his EYE, they need to jump to the LEFT and meet the Ev0L dude with the bullet in his back. He would be happy to tell you what happens when you try to deny Jack his GREATNESS!
I read through all your Lost finale entries the other day, amazing stuff you wrote, I felt like reliving all the feelings from the finale once again.
And yes it was all about love, sacrifice, about the characters, esp. Jack. And in the end they all reuinted because they met the people on the island in the most important time in their lives, struggling with their issues, growing up, etc. And they would live together for eternity.
LOST imitates Life (and Death, obviously) and in the end, the show did a wonderful job of proving that notion to be spot-on.
And yeah the mysteries...some of them were great and intriguing but in the end they were just a background for the characters and their arcs. Some of them were a challenge for the Losties, the island was testing them, it was always about the characters.
I just get weepy-eyed about the Finale over and over again sometimes, but I think that with time, the heightened emotions fade and I'm just happy to have been a part of this experience with everyone!
