The Lie of Male/Female Pay Disparity

So I saw another study lamenting the disparity in pay between men and women. This one tells us that "Corporations Pay Women CFOs 16 Percent Less Than Men". My answer is so what? Is that supposed to be some sort of injustice? Let's apply some logic ( Read more... )

The boys' club exists at my shit job.
They have NEVER had a female work in the woodshop as a full time employee of that department.
I make a little better than HALF their average starting pay.
I have BEGGED to work in the shop.
I must really fucking SUCK at SANDING for them to not take me up on that offer.

"One study found that customers who viewed videos featuring a black male, a white female, or a white male actor playing the role of an employee helping a customer were 19% more satisfied with the white male employee's performance and also were more satisfied with the store's cleanliness and appearance. This despite that all three actors performed identically, read the same script, and were in exactly the same location with identical camera angles and lighting. Moreover, 45 percent of the customers were women and 41 percent were non-white, indicating that even women and minority customers prefer white men. In a second study, they found that white male doctors were rated as more approachable and competent than equally-well performing women or minority doctors."

The world is so fucked.

At my shit job, the theory is that they don't want to have to modify their behavior or the "culture" of the woodshop to avoid potential lawsuits of having delicate feminine ears around. I don't really see any other signs to make me think they give a rat's ass if they get sued for anything so I something else is going on. OH- and also-- there are NO black female employees. That is so weird to me, but they say that black women never apply. I guess they don't want to do factory work.

And this goes to the number one economic reason women earn less -- they are much costlier to employ.

no what were saying is that people hire people like themselves. Appear to be upper middle class and people who are also upper middle class will trust you more. Appear to be male and other men will feel like your a known risk. this is human psychology. there is a double standard. Women who are agressive and career orientated as men are judged at a much higher level then men, their is always teh assumption that at whatever level women are going to leave, have a family, have to look after an ageing relative.

THERE ARE HUGE DOUBLE STANDARDS. And it isn't just about gender, the same exists around being open about ones sexuality, being obviously from another culture, having a differnt skin colour and ist not jsut in the west. Go to the 'far east' and see how many cmpanies are run by 'westerners' and how many of those companies are run by people who got that position simply because they have a penis
