Halloween dates all the way back to Celts. They had a festival called Samhain. The first of November was the end of harvest so the thirty-first would be the last day of their "year". They also believed that the veil between our world and the world of the undead was thinnest on that night. So they celebrated the return of the dead to the earth for the day. At least back then it meant something, whether it was real or not.
