It sounds like you two have some expectations to discuss and reasonable guidelines to set based on them.

Oh, we have discussed! Mind you, we've been living together for a bit over 30 years now, so there has been plenty of time for that discussion. The whole joint gift thing ended years and years ago. And, of course it comes out of expectations and experiences from childhood (we never outgrow those things, do we?) The cake, itself is minor-I've baked my own some years and that doesn't bother me-at least I get exactly what I want.

I suspect that I was already leaning toward grumpy and out of sorts when my sister posted a comment about an amazing chocolate babka that she was eating-the cake was just the trigger.

But I do think that sharing your birthday with someone else in your household is not a wonderful idea.
