"turned out the lights and opened fire". oh my god...that is absolutely horrid. changing the way society treats and looks at women will take a long time, but reducing easy access to guns is sure as hell faster and easier. i would like to see some sort of statistic or survey that showed which countries in the world have the least mistreatment or inequality towards women..

I know that in the Western hemisphere, Sweden has made incredible strides in gender equality. It's *amazing* what they've done. For example, w/ prostitution, they started prosecuting the clients instead of the sex workers, and prostitution rates dropped by about 75%!

hmmm interestingly enough I was just talking about how I felt as a woman and a certain sector of our cdn society.

Its true tho. I wonder when it will change. And why does this get labelled feminism, or advocacy for women rather then human rights. I mean women are half the human population. I think that's general enough to call human rights.

Feminism makes it somehow more manageable. Yes, it's a route to human rights, absolutely. But, calling it feminism and focusing on women, as this article does, gives us a map, a way forward to open up that larger topic of "human rights" that I can't imagine trying to tackle without some sort of in-road. And feminism means that we choose to look through the lens of gender & women as a means for social change.

You know, I just posted something on my facebook about the newest T-Mobile comercials; viewing a woman as a trophy, making women subconsciously think that we have to look like this to get 'attention.' If the corporate world cannot abide by the rules of everyone being treated equally, why does the rest of the world have to aide by it? I believe this issue goes a lot deeper than any of us can begin to realize. I also believe fixing this issue will take a lot longer than we can even phathom. We live in a sick society.

The other issue is that the corporate world can't abide by the rules of everyone being treated equally b/c they're part of a capitalists system which thrives on inequality . . . It can't operate without it!
