While fighting off ice spears [Background] When Jet was eight years old, the Fire Nation (or more specifically, the "Rough Rhinos") burned down his village and killed his parents. Since then, he hated the Fire Nation to the point where it became an obsession.
Over time, he formed a group of young Earth Kingdom refugees, all of whom had lost something because of the Fire Nation, and called them the "Freedom Fighters." They lived to make the Fire Nation miserable, and set their home up in the trees near a town under its control.
Eventually, they saved Aang--the Avatar aka person destined to save the world from the Fire Nation--and his friends, Katara and Sokka, when they accidentally walked into a Fire Nation camp that Jet and his group had been planning to ambush. Katara and Aang warmed up to Jet immediately, but Sokka had his suspicions, especially when Jet attacked an innocent old man and claimed that he'd been carrying a poisoned dagger. Still, both Katara and Aang chose to believe Jet's word over Sokka's distrust, which was their mistake. As it turned out, Jet was planning to flood the nearby town and thus get rid of the Fire Nation soldiers and civilians. He tricked Katara and Aang into filling up the river by lying and saying that the Fire Nation was going to set fire to the forest. Ultimately, they figured out his true intentions, but by then, it was too late. Jet gave the signal for Longshot, a Freedom Fighter, to destroy the dam. Fortunately, Sokka had warned the town beforehand, so no one was harmed. Jet accused him of being a traitor, to which Sokka replied that he was the traitor for his willingness to harm the innocent. He, Katara, and Aang then leave.
It seemed Jet took Sokka's words to heart, as he plus two of his group members, Longshot and Smellerbee, went over to Ba Sing Se to get a second chance. On the ferry there, they meet Zuko and Iroh, who are secretly firebenders (people who can manipulate fire, originating from the Fire Nation). After Zuko helped Jet and the others steal food from the Captain to give out to the passengers, Jet offered him to join up with him and the Freedom Fighters. Zuko turned him down though.
Later, Jet spotted Iroh heating up his tea with his hands, and realized that he was a firebender. He then became determined to confirm this, despite his earlier intentions to start a new life. In time, he got frustrated by his lack of proof, and decided to outright attack them to force them into firebending, as he believed himself to be the better swordsman. However, Zuko gained the upper hand, and likely would've won had the Dai Li--the "police" of Ba Sing Se--not interrupted their fight. Seeing as how Jet had seemingly attacked Zuko and Iroh without reason, he was arrested, and his claims of them being firebenders were ignored. Afterwards, the Dai Li brainwashed him into thinking that he'd been living peacefully in the city since arrival and that he knew where Aang's lost bison, Appa, was.
True to the plan, he confronted Katara and the others and told them that he knew where Appa was. The group nearly ended up leaving Ba Sing Se. Before they could, Jet's brainwash was uncovered when Smellerbee and Longshot came along, revealing that their story and Jet's didn't match. He regained his memory of where he was taken with help from Katara, and they all headed over to Lake Laogai.
As it turned out, Jet's brainwash could be renewed with the right words, and Long Feng, the leader of the Dai Li, forced him to attack Aang. The good news was that Aang managed to bring him back to the senses. The bad news was that Jet tried to attack Long Feng, who retaliated with pillar of earth, causing fatal injuries. While he promised Katara that he'd be fine, Jet eventually died with Longshot and Smellerbee by his side.
[Personality] Jet is a born leader. He's smug and confident enough to convince people that he knows what he's doing, charismatic enough to get them to help him, and smart enough that he usually does know what he's doing. He doesn't follow instinct alone, claiming that doing so "gets you killed," and often strategizes beforehand. He can be patient and cautious when the situation isn't personal, and is always determined to see things through the end.
His key trait though is his unhealthy hatred of the Fire Nation and anything to do with it, since to him all Fire Nation are the same. Morals and promises come second to it, although he's now aware of his extremity. He believes that he's doing what's right and and it's difficult to convince him otherwise. With the right amount of hatred, even his rationality goes down a notch, and he can become desperate.
Underneath his arrogance and anger, Jet isn't actually all that afraid to show weakness and compassion. He is clearly sorrowful whenever he's thinking about his parents, admitting the memory of their deaths to be "too painful," and acknowledges that he isn't proud of everything he's done. His confusion is definitely shown when the others believe him to have been brainwashed and ask him to remember where they took him, and he doesn't look anything like the confident Jet from before. When on his deathbed, he apologizes to Aang for attacking him, despite not having any control over his actions, and attempts to comfort Katara with obvious lies.
[Specialties/Abilities] Jet is a skilled fighter, especially with his hook swords. His swords come into play with his agility as well, as he uses them to jump through trees. He is capable of many acrobatic feats, adding to his ability as a fighter. However, he is still human, and has no special powers.
Additionally, as stated before, he's a talented strategist. He also can do bird calls, which he used as a form of communication between the Freedom Fighters.
[Affection] Jet's a bit of a touchy-feely guy, so he's not going to react too harshly to anything. Depending on who it is, his reaction will range from shoving to dismissing it.
[Fighting] Jet lives to fight, so he's bound to get into a few (or more) scrapes.
[Other Facts] Because he and the main members of the Freedom Fighters have strange names for where they're from (or just plain strange names, like "The Duke"), I'm assuming Jet isn't his real name.
He's also one of those characters who just pulls his swords out of nowhere. Let's just say he keeps them strapped to the back of his waist or something.
