[Just outside the Violet City Pokemon Center stands a smirking and proud Franziska von Karma.]

I wasn't planning to, but I might as well tell you... I've caught a new Pokemon.

[She releases something from the Pokeball in her hand. It's a Ledyba.

If you do discover the details of the gym leader and his team, I am also searching for that information.

I just heard Mr. Falkner has a team consisting of flying type Pokemon. According to the information source, training up your Pokemon to the mid twenties is somewhat necessary. There seems to be no reason for them to lie.

[And Franziska doesn't like it. She doesn't like it one bit.]

[The tiny bird on her shoulder chirps, very curious.]

Ah, flying types... as I recall, rock-type attacks are effective against them.

Perhaps I need to make a little stop at the Dark Cave then, before the challenge. But it'll be a shame if the battle was too easy.

Electricity also zaps the pesky birds down. Apparently you can catch a few Mareep on Route 32, just south of Violet City.

There is no shame in exploiting weaknesses in battle. It is merely a sound strategy.

Ah, thank you for that information. I expect an electric type will come in useful eventually, though my Hercule should be sufficient to deal with the leader's Flying types.

I just want it to be a worthwhile challenge.

[Knowing that both her Pokemon are at a disadvantage and would do anything to stop it, this is a rather empty boast.]

'Hercule'? A strong rock-type then?

I am certain it will be, regardless of type advantages or not.

Yes. Hercule is a Geodude at present. I have been training him to catch up with Watson in levels and he's doing splendidly.

Oh?

I peered into the Dark Cave a while back; it was pitch-black. Seeing as you've been there, do you know of anything that can brighten the area?

I remember one of the HMs could light dark caves, but I found Hercule on Route 49. I wandered too far north on my way to Cherrygrove and stumbled upon the route and Hercule. Luckily I realized I had gone astray and turned back quickly so I did not lose much time.

[Ah. What did Papa tell her about making conclusions by induction?]

...So you can catch Rock Pokemon outside of a cave.

Do you know where this HM can be found? [She read a bit about HMs in the Trainer Handbook, but nothing detailing how to obtain them.]

On that particular route, that is the case.

I am afraid I do not, but I believe the name is Flash?

I see... This is useful information.

What's your name? It might be a good idea if we keep sharing information with each other when anything new comes up.

Exchanging names and contact information is an excellent idea. I am Naoto Shirogane, a detective. And yourself?

You know, you look a bit younger than the average detective.

[Perhaps he's a prodigy too?]

I am younger than the average detective. I started assisting my grandfather secretly, then publicly. I have solved 24 cases total, and several entirely on my own.

It is a pleasure to meet you, von Karma-san.
