She turned her head sharply, avoiding his emotionless glare. She bit her lip, knowing that from here he wouldn't see her discomfort. However, she knew that he would know because she couldn't look at him only when she was angry or upset. This time, Uhura was a little of both.
"Nyota, I do not see-"
"You wouldn't, would you," she whispered. It wasn't a question, but a statement. It hurt her that she knew the answer without his words. The pain that had been growing in her heart finally spilled over the edge; she had to get away before tears fell freely. She started for the door.
"What did I do incorrectly?" Spock said. She stopped. There was a slight amount of exasperation in his voice. She didn't hear his footsteps; he wasn't pursuing her. Was he rooted to the spot in confusion or guilt? Both?
"I've been standing up for you...for our relationship...this whole time," she sighed, restraining the urge to face him. She didn't want him to see her cry. "When you're ready to fight for us, come find me."
She gave him a minute to respond, but he never did. She exited his room just as the first tear fell.
