Good thing about getting a new phone is that ... well, you get a new phone.
The not so good thing is that they pre-loaded a new sim card, so now I have to transfer my contacts over to the new phone. By hand.

Can you go to the AT&T store (or whatever service you have) and ask them to transfer your contacts? The Sprint people did mine in about 2 minutes.

clonetwin has a good point, AT&T can do that for some phones and it will get contacts that are not in the SIM card. It even works for (at least some) non-AT&T phones.

Additionally:

1. If the contacts *are* on your sim (usually not, unless you know they are) then you can just put the sim in your new phone and transfer the contacts off.

2. Failing all else, if you have a supported contact management application, you can enter everything in your PC and sync your phone.

Or google contacts could help, maybe? At least for the future, if you put info in a contact manager of some kind - I think you can sync phone info with Google contacts and other programs, then you should easily be able to get an app for the iPhone that allows you to finish the transfer.

Where is your spouseling when you need him, mmm? ;)

Verizon will transfer the contacts for you in thier store, usually free of charge. If they DO charge, it's not more than $10 I dont think.

I imagine, as others have said, that most other services will do the same
