that's a bummer. I didn't have him friended, but I'd occasionally drop by because I enjoyed his writing. I have no idea what happened, but it seems a shame that a bunch of assholes brought this about.
I loved his last webcomic and was totally bummed when it ended. It seems everyone but me read the countdowns and knew the story was coming to an end.
As for snark, it happens, but I've only ever seen it in communities, not someone's personal journal. I guess it helps that my journal is friends-only. I run on the hopes that what I've said in my personal journal will not bite me in the ass. If someone wants to be a dick, I'll just remove them from my list.
I didn't see the post in question or any of the ones around it but I was sorry to read that he'd deleted his lj and glad to realise he'd put it back up between you writing this post and me reading it. Some of the stuff he's said and done has bothered me but he seems a mostly decent and amusing guy, and he also seems the sort of person for whom the loss of his lj would be a really big blow.
Thats said, from his own post on the subject (which I realise was written after this one) I get the feeling it wasn't as simple as you've put it, and he's specifically not interested in getting criticised less often.
Criticism is one thing. You can tell someone "Hey man, what you said was wrong/offensive/stupid" without attempting to verbally beat the person to a pulp just because you can. (Which is what I personally had a problem with.)

Well I certainly agree with that in principle and without seeing the actual discussion am not in a position to argue the particulars. Anyway, I definitely agree with nothing is ever simple on the internet though I'm not sure you need the "on the internet" :)
