Summary: Sanghyuk is happy denying his crush on the barista but Jaehwan can't help but meddle.
Sanghyuk has his nose buried in a book that he wasn't interested in, not even a tiny bit. But he couldn't just sit there.
Earlier in the week he had tried wistfully staring out the window, which only made him look like a creep that liked watching people walk by a store. The week before he had tried just looking around the room, but the eye contact sent too many unintended signals. Listening to music didn't work simply because he couldn't hear the sounds of a beautifully tanned barista with a killer smile sing softly to himself as he made cups of coffee.
Also staring at the barista was not an option, even though to Sanghyuk he was by far the most interesting thing in the room.
So he stares at his book, turning the page every two minutes or so to make it seem like he's actually reading it. Weeks ago he had chosen the perfect seat, one where the handsome barista would always be in his peripheral vision and by the window so he would always have good lighting for his books. The books he never even bothered to read when he came here.
It wasn't so he could spy on him or anything! No way. He just..wanted to make sure he didn't spill any of the coffee on his nice little vest. Dry cleaning is expensive these days!
Which is why he was quickly deciding that bring his hyung was a bad idea. Jaehwan hyung naturally just couldn't shut up, so with that paired with the fact that he knew Sanghyuk was crushing even though he refused to admit it.
"You know, you could just talk to him. You do know that, right? Talking to a barista isn't illegal, and look! He's not busy right now. There's your chance Hyukkie!" He said, pointing at the barista across the store while Sanghyuk looked up from his book to glare at him.
Hyuk was well aware that Jaehwan was just trying to help, but he really wasn't.
Before Sanghyuk could stop him Jaehwan was pulling the book out of his hands and sitting on it. The younger stared at him, not even knowing where to start complaining.
Jaehwan was quick, and just before Sanghyuk could start his whining he purposely knocked over Sanghyuks coffee. It spilled everywhere, Hyuk gasping as the coffee burned him through his shirt.
"Oh! I'm so sorry, Hyukkie. Mr. Barista, can we get some napkins? We had a little spill." A little was an understatement. But that didn't matter because soon the barista was coming over with a stack of napkins.
Instead of handing them to Hyuk or Jaehwan, he gasped when he saw the state Hyuk was in and began quickly dabbling his shirt with napkins himself. He didn't have to look at Jaehwan to know he had a smug smile on his stupid face.
'Damn you, Jaehwan.' He thought, a blush on his cheeks as the barista continued to fuss over him and attempt to clean the shirt that was surely going to have a huge stain on it no matter what he did. He cleared his throat, looking away shyly.
He was totally not sneaking peeks at the tan collarbone that the barista was showing off.
And he was definitely not secretly thanking his friend even though he basically burned his chest off and ruined his shirt. Definitely.
When the barista looked up at him and their eyes met Sanghyuk froze, never before getting to see just how pretty his eyes were. He didn't know what to do or how to react, especially since his face was flushing a bright shade of scarlet. Even brighter than the burn he was sure to have on his chest.
The younger only snapped out of his daze when the barista spoke, and Sanghyuk finally noticed how he had been staring at him.
"What?" He replied dumbly, not catching what he said.
The fact that the barista was chuckling at him only made him blush harder, and he knew that he was embarrassing himself. Why was it so difficult to talk to him? He was just a barista, handsome or not.
Again, the youngest out of three missed what Hakyeon had said.
When he still looked blank and puzzled, Jaehwan must have decided that he couldn't watch his friend suffer another moment longer. Sometimes Jaehwan wasn't a complete jerk.
"He asked if you were okay, you idiot." Jaehwan said, giving him a look that not so subtly told him not to muck this chance up. Sanghyuks mind, thankfully, went into autopilot.
"Oh! Yeah, I'm fine. It's just a little bit of coffee, I can get this cleaned." He said, chuckling awkwardly while he mentally kicked himself. A bit? He just called a whole Grande a bit? What was wrong with him!?
Trying not to focus on how stupid he sounded, Sanghyuk quickly tried to think of something to use as a conversation starter but it seemed he didn't need to. Hakyeon was ushering him up out of his seat, telling him how if they waited another moment it would stain and he would never be able to get it out.
Before Sanghyuk, or even Jaehwan, realized what was happening, Hakyeon was quickly dragging him to the back of the coffee shop.
"Take your shirt off. I live above here, so you can stay here while I try to wash out the stain." Hakyeon said, holding his hands out expectantly. Trying to hide his surprise and his blush, he looked down and quickly began undoing the buttons of his shirt. He didn't even think about how he was now going to be half naked in front of this gorgeous barista until he was already handing over his shirt.
His blush was now very obvious, and it was a good thing he didn't catch Hakyeons fleeting glance at his abdomen or else he might have fainted from all of his blood rushing to his cheeks instead of his brain.
There he was, on a day where he was supposed to just continue his subtle spying on the barista, and was now in the back room with his shirt off.
Hakyeon quickly climbed the spiral staircase, which Sanghyuk could only assume lead up to Hakyeons apartment above. How long was he supposed to wait here? His next class started in twenty-five minutes, and his past experience with dryers always took closer to an hour.
Why did he have to bring Jaehwan? He should have brought one of his other friends. One that wouldn't meddle and would let him live the rest of his life admiring the barista from afar, not dump a cup of coffee down his front just so he could get some alone time with him.
Eventually, he couldn't stop himself and climbed the first two steps on the staircase to at least attempt a glance at what Hakyeon was doing.
"Hello? Can I come up? I'm kind of..down here without a shirt?" He said, hoping that he could hear him.
Sanghyuk almost fell backwards when Hakyeon suddenly appeared at the top of the stairs and motioned him up, before disappearing again.
Why did I have to bring Jaehwan?
He repeated that question over and over again in his mind as he climbed the steps upwards, starting to get frightened about whether or not this barista was as kind and charming as he seemed. What if he was a murderer and he waited for opportunities like this to lure his victims into his home where they never saw the light of day again? What if he was normal and Sanghyuk was the one going crazy? Both seemed like equally bad situations.
None of this would have happened if he hadn't have brought Jaehwan.
But when he reached the top step and safely had his two feet on the hardwood floor he realized that their current situation was the latter.
It was almost all hardwood, just like the coffee shop below, and bookshelves took over two of the four walls. One wall had Hakyeons bed against it, and the other was where all the appliances were located. There was no television, which made why he had so many books clear. That, or he just really liked reading.
Hakyeon was at the sink, scrubbing the stain with a washcloth as the warm water seemed to have soaked into his entire shirt.
"It just- it won't- it won't come out." Hakyeon said angrily, and Sanghyuk couldn't help but laugh a bit. This whole situation was finally dawning on him, and he couldn't help but chuckle. The barista looked at him as if he was crazy.
"Um. I'm sorry, but thank you for trying. Do you think I could just.." He looked around, too embarrassed to finish that sentence. But as of this moment, it seemed as if borrowing a shirt was his only option. He couldn't go back into the shop with a soaked shirt, and he definitely couldn't go out there without a shirt whatsoever.
A look flashed across Hakyeons face too quickly for Sanghyuk to identify it, before Hakyeon was quickly walking across the room. "Oh, I-I'm really sorry by the way. Here, this looks like it might fit. You're a regular anyways, right? Just drop it off the next time you come." He said briskly, holding out a loose gray t-shirt for him. Sanghyuk nodded, slipping it on.
"Y-You should probably get back down there, and I think I'm the one who should apologize." He said, an awkward smile on his face. This was probably the first time he ever managed to have a full conversation with the other male, and he couldn't help but think about how nice this was. Even if he was in his apartment and technically keeping Hakyeon from running his shop.
It seemed like Hakyeon finally realized that he had left his shop unattended, because he grabbed Sanghyuk by the wrist, despite his smaller height he was surprisingly strong, and yanked him down the stairs. If this was a common thing for the other he was probably going to have to make sure he didn't wear any watches, for fear the glass would be crushed under his grip.
When Hakyeon released him, he saw him head towards the door before stopped in his tracks. Whipping around, he looked at him.
"Your name's Sanghyuk, right? You always sit at the table by the window?" He asked, and Sanghyuks eyes widened. He hadn't realized that the other was even aware of his existence before the little coffee accident happened.
"Yeah." Sanghyuk said faintly, not knowing what to say afterwards. Especially since Hakyeon was giving him probably one of the sweetest smiles he's ever seen.
"Since I couldn't fix your shirt right away..why don't I give you my number so you can pick it up once I finish cleaning it. Then you can give me my shirt back as well." He said, his dark brown eyes glinting.
To say that Sanghyuk was surprised was an understatement. His tongue wasn't working properly, so all he could do was nod. Hakyeons smile grew as he ripped a piece of paper off from his notepad and scribbled down his number.
"I'll see you later then?" Hakyeon asked, their hands brushing as he handed over the paper. Again, all Sanghyuk could do was nod. His mind had officially shut down, and when he left the back with Hakyeon he was still clutching his number between both of his hands.
Once he reached his table, he slid into his seat and stared silently down at the piece of paper before he gulped.
When he looked up his face was only a few centimeters away from Jaehwas, who had seemingly noticed the paper and was now leaning over most of the table to see what it was. A smug smile was on Jaehwans face when he looked up.
Sanghyuk was so incredibly happy he had decided to bring Jaehwan.
But it's just a phone number, and he's just picking up his shirt once it's clean. It's not like it means anything, right?
Right?
