Magic

Magic is split into two distinct types. Free magic, and the Charter. Spells include weather working, fire, light, summoning, binding, illusion, etc. There are also fighting specific spells, some of which can be inscribed into weapons.

Free magic: The natural magic that existed before the creation of the Charter. It is not structured, and can either be used in conjunction with the Charter or against it. Free magic is said to have an ozone-like smell to it. Strongly linked to the art of Necromancy,(see section) it is typically easier to use, as there is no required spellwork involved.

The Charter: A continuum of markings that can be used by themselves, or with others to weave spells. Created by the Seven, who wove together a system for magic, a mark exists for everything. Depending on the mastery of the Charter mage, they may or may not have focuses to help them cast stronger marks, commonly used in order to hold weaker marks in a spell. Practitioners have a Charter mark on their foreheads. The marks can be thought up, written down, or even whistled.

Also,

Necromancy: the art of raising the dead. Necromancers, and others in this trade develop a Death sense. The tools of this trade consists of a sword, an ear for music, and a set of seven bells*, named here in order of size:
  1. Ranna, the Sleeper. Has a sweet gentle tone.
  2. Mosrael, the Waker. Wakes the dead, at the cost of sending the ringer into Death.
  3. Kibeth, the Walker. Allows the dead to move, from or to Death. Can also cause wielder to go where they would not. Is rather raucous in tone.
  4. Dyrim, the Speaker. Gives the dead a voice, but can also silence a voice.
  5. Belgaer, the Thinker. Returns the memories of the dead, along with independent thought. Also can erase it.
  6. Saraneth, the Binder. Binds the dead to the wielder's will.
  7. Astarael, the Sorrowful/Weeper. Banishes all who hears it into Death. (Unless used in a specific working...)
The Abhorsen is the only necromancer who uses Charter magic. He is responsible for laying the dead to rest. *Traditionally only for use with the Dead. But people are people.
