Last night, I got home (late) to find that the cats had decided to use the livingroom carpet as a litterbox. Grabbed them, whacked them, clenaed it up, fed Fuzzy Butt, and thought no more of it.
Didn't get to sleep until 2am. No idea why.
Got up at 6, got on the road. The drive in took 1.5 times as long as usual. WTF? Traffic, not my sleep issues.
The day was VERY productive. So productive, in fact, that we're a day and a half extra ahead of schedule just from today. The two major cutting-corners work-arounds were supposed to be fixed properly by Thursday. Both should be done by the end of today.
...it was almost time to go home. I got a phone call.
We've been developing in Java 1.6. Seems like a no-brainer. The language changed a lot between 1.4 and 1.5, but 1.5 has been out for almost four years, now.
Except, well, the customer is the government. They haven't upgraded to the new stuff, because nobody has been paid to test it. (In their defense, it costs a couple million dollars to test -- this stuff can cause planes to crash if things don't work right. It *HAS* to work right.) They're still using ... 1.4.
Why yes, we *have* been using a lot of the features of 1.5, why do you ask? Backporting would probably take about three weeks.
What? Yes, the delivery deadline is only three weeks away, and we have two, maybe three relatively major features to add in that time. Not to mention a week or so of heavy testing.
There is a way to make this work with 1.6 which, apparently, is very common (Bundled JVM with app). Common enough that the government doesn't even bat an eye when you mention it. *WHEW*
Of course, I wound up being at work for 11 hours total, thanks to that, describing everything about the one new feature for the one developer, and soothing some ruffled feathers from one meeting.
Got in the car. These days, I usually talk to people on the phone in the car most of the way home.
I called *everyone* that I usually call, and then some, and wound up getting hold of nobody.
Which was impressive, since it again took 1.5 times as long as it should.
One of them ... both home and cell numbers have apparently changed. She sounds neither like a guy, nor like a guy with a throat condition.
I got home to the lovely smell of cat poop, round two. The cats have decided, again, that the living room carpet is a litter box. This time was obviously no accident, they both headed for the stairs at top speed instead of doing the usual "feed me" dances.
They are now locked in the basement, where the litter boxes are. They will STAY there for quite some time. I will probably move the water in there as soon as I calm down, but there will not be any food for at least overnight.
My house, for some reason, is infested with iridescent green flies. Big ones.
