We got numerous calls saying that we were owed another $1400 on our tax return and they wanted to credit it to our account..

Yeah right. Don't think so. Got the tax refund, spent the tax refund. Stoopid scammers.

In the same vein, if you answer the phone and it's somebody claiming to be from your bank, credit card company, credit union, phone company, electric company, etc and they want personal information such as the spelling of your name, your address, account numbers or social security number, it's somebody trying to social engineer you. Any company that you have a legitimate business relationship with will not only have that information, but will _confirm_ it... you know, the old "Are you still at 123 this street in Any Town?".

The one thing to be careful about is what happened to demonlurking.

He got one of those calls ("Need to speak with you about your ATM card") and checked with the bank and they said "Probably just phishing, ignore it". A few weeks later his debit card got frozen because the people calling actually had been from the visa end of things, not the bank end of things... checking on some unusual purchases, I think.

It was very weird and very frustrating, especially since the bank didn't know anything about it when he called them originally. It took over a month to get the card activated again.

Sounds like a failure on the part of the bank. If they screw up like this, it should take no more than a day ... and I've gotten re-issues in a short a time as overnight.

I've gotten calls like that too. I let them go to voice mail, then Google the number that comes up on ID. If the number shows up in abundance on websites about fraud, I don't call back.
